True jade is generally classified into soft jade (nephrite) , so-called “ancient jade” and hard jade (jadeite). Jade is the royal gemstone in China. Jade was a Royal Gemstone in China and Asia, used as the Emperor Seal in the Palace, as the totems and the Essence of Heaven and the Earth in eastern religion. Of all materials in the world of Chinese antiquities, jade best exemplifies the essential aspects of Chinese culture. It is used for both spiritual and ornamental purposes. It is the symbol of power and associated with heroes, the symbols of pure, noble and sublime, and stands for morality. It is also a symbol of ethics and norms. In ancient times, only aristocrats could own jade wares. The imperial seal of the Qing Dynasty, the first feudal society in China, was made of jade. Chinese men of social station, such as the literati and the officialdom of China, would wear these jade cylinder thumb rings (or archer’s rings) on their thumbs. They are said to have evolved from the very early devices used to bring the bow string back and release so that it would not tear the thumb of the archer. By the time of the Song and Ming Dynasties the thumb rings had devolved to the point of being simply beautiful cylinders of jade or other materials that, when worn, were a statement of the individual’s higher rank. The thumb ring is an excellent way to express privilege because with one of these thumb rings on it is almost impossible to do any sort of real work with the hands. They make all things rather clumsy, but they do certainly express the privilege of the individual wearing them. Its surprising that an item as small and plain as a cylindrical thumb ring can provide so much opportunity for artistry. Much of the enjoyment of these rings comes from the materials they are made of. But as archers rings became more ornamental and less practical, the materials that could be used expanded greatly. In this way they are very similar to Chinese snuff bottles, and many of the same materials were used. This amazing thumb ring is carved from nepherite jade. The design is of a Taotie, wonderfully incised in the Han Dynasty tradition. The condition is old, but perfect. __________________________________________________ Jackson’s On Main sells high quality art and antiquities at excellent prices from both our extensive collection and from the private collections of our clients and various estates.
