This delightful piece was clearly carved by a master craftsman and someone more knowledgeable may recognize the style which would be helpful to more specifically dating this piece which I believe to be at least 19th century if not older. This figure stands 6 3/4 inches tall and stands on a black stone base 1/2 inch thick, with the entire piece standing 7 1/4 inches tall. As described above, this gorgeous carving is free of any cracks, chips or hairlines but does have a few places, particularly several to the deer, where something has banged the piece and left a tiny spot where the stone was damaged/discolored by the pressure – as perhaps it was moved in a box with other items when not quite protected enough. That said, these little marks present as simply part of it’s journey and don’t detract from this beautifully detailed carved figure.
