Stunning antique Chinese scholar’s marble table screen. This is a beautiful table screen with a marble insert. The natural marble design resembles remote landscape. The frame and the base are made of the precious huanghuali wood. Hand carved on one side and on the ends. There are four ancient Chinese characters engraved on the marble and what looks like an artist’s stamp. I can’t work out what they meant. The screen has been assembled with tongue and groove method. The joints had became loose over the years and through various climate. It is however still in very good shape. Screens like this one were favoured by Chinese scholars due to the simplicity and ascetic appeal. The screen was part of a writer’s desk items. One of the wood carved sides has been repair otherwise in excellent condition. Bought in Beijing in the 1970s and carried back to Australia when I retired 25 years ago. Measurement: 23 cm (L) x 10 cm (W) x 36.5 cm (H). The battery is there for size comparison only. It has nothing to do with the item. Most of my collection is one of a kind. I bought the items because I liked it for myself. They were never intended to be resold. Each item has a story and when possible I hand carried in my luggage from all over the world to bring back to Australia.
